Nothing better than being given a project by Dave and Jarrad here at Afends.
Deal is that a bunch of us get one Afends denim jacket and basically get instructed to do whatever the fuck we want with it. Eventually to be an exhibition when were all finished.
My history and present Afends position is working with garments: pattern-making and sewing are an essential knowledge to fit and help the designers here to specify full clothing ranges.
Anyway....Got the mens jacket and thought chicks are way more inspiring at the fitting stage....so made a little hotshort pattern - way more fun.
Cut the sleeves, back, and lower body away from the jacket. This was just enough fabric to get all the 16 pieces to make the shorts. (hacked up an old shirt for the body lining and internal pocket bags.
Sliced off the original lower waistband and one of the sleeve cuffs to make the new waistband (allowing me to use the existing metal buttons and button-holes at the front of the shorts) Joined them under where a belt loop goes and now looks like a legit denim short waistband - ha.
Engineered some bust (= boob) fitting darts into the side of the jacket front and snuck in waist fitting darts underneath the front seams to sculpt the flat mens jacket to fit a girls shape.
Cut the main jacket into the Halter (= back strap closing) and cut the same shape for the lining.
Many hours of sewing and procrastinating later....sandpaper some holes in here and there - wash those for nice distressed look.......done.
Enjoyed every minute of it.
