And so brings to a close our Spring Featured Artist Series, wrapping up this seasons inside look into our creatives with our Afends photographer extraordinaire, Samuel Nolan!
Originally from Woolgoolga on NSWs mid north coast, Samuel cut his teeth studying graphic designer and is a self taught snapper. He has one of the best eyes in the game, keeping true to his photography roots using various formats of film. Death to digital!! Samuel sports wild red mutton chops and jams out to thrash and rock n roll most the day. He is also one-part of the beautiful creative power couple that is the Nolans being married to our incredible Womens designer Bec.
Read on for more of what makes Samuel tick...
How would you describe your style of art?
Well mostly its known as photography, but I do dabble in taming a pen to paper every so often.
Whats your favourite medium to work with?
Film cameras, black pens and some rough bleedy paper.
What do you do when youre not creating?
Im always watching things that motivate me or teach me new ways of creating. This works two ways though, I either get better by trying new techniques or feel shit for watching videos and not getting my hands dirty.

Where do you live, whats good about it and where would you rather be (if anywhere?)
In Mullumbimby with my wife. Its so good having a big house and our own space as we are both creative and are messy as hell. Fuck, Id rather be anywhere and everywhere. I hate sitting still, travelling was implanted in my head at an early age by my dad and the itch to wander has reared its head heavily over the last few years.
What does your ideal world look like?
Im not sure… I think I need to see more of this one to be able to conceptualise what mine would be.
If you were in a band what would it sound like?
It would sound like anything on http://derangedrecords.bandcamp.com. That page is pure gold! thanks for the tip Slugger!
Sam Nolan shoots all Afends Campaigns...here is a sneak peak of whats to come.
Whats music have you been spinning of late?
I flick the mouse and click on anything from the above.
What is your spirit animal?
Well Im currently sporting a solid set of red mutton chops, so if we do the math, I guess it would be a Mutton (Meat of an Old Lamb) but then again I dont eat meat so a dead lamb doesnt fit… maybe the mutton bird… they are fucked too.
Whats the best (or worst) advice youve been given?
To not care so much what others think… my wife taught me this, she is great like that, she doesnt give a shit what you think, she just does what makes her and people around her happy. I was always hesitant to put out work because I second guess myself straight away. It helped me progress a lot!
Sam Nolan designed the BBMC Tee for Afends latest Collection.
What makes you happy?
Developing a new roll of film at home and scanning it in, when you get a good photo that way its so rewarding that you went through the whole process.
What makes you angry?
My urge to travel when i cant. It drives me crazy sometimes.

What could you not live without?
Bec and our many poop filled animals.
And last but not least question: what is your favourite piece in the collection?
The Blacklist Chinos… Good name & good colour.
