This weeks Any Tips comes from our Byron store manager & jack-of-all-trades, Byron Boz Carney.
A longstanding member of our Afends family, Boz grew up here in the rainbow region playing in various hardcore bands & touring extensively with his band 50 Lions (alongside the likes of Rise Against, Parkway Drive & I Killed the Prom Queen). Now in his mid 20s and playing in new outfit PILOTS, Boz is a veteran of the live scene and gives his take on his favourite 5 live venues to play downunder. Read on for the tips...
1. The Youth Activities Centre AKA (The YAC or YOUTHY) Byron Bay NSW.
The birthplace of hometown heroes Parkway Drive and countless other amazing local Punk and Hardcore bands. Often referred to as the best All Ages venue in the country! I spent the majority of my teens here enjoying some of the best local and international acts I have ever seen. Sweaty, hot and raw! The Youthy fucking rules.
2. The Arthouse, AKA (The Arty) Melbourne VIC
Unfortunatley The Arty is no more, closing its doors back in 2011. I was lucky enough to not only play here but also catch some incredible shows. Home to the likes of Mindsnare, Bodyjar and Frenzal Rhomb. The Arthouse is/was Punk Rock Royalty!
3. Crowbar, Brisbane QLD
Crowbar lies beneath the filth of Brisbanes Valley district. Take a narrow stairwell down into a tiny dark bar with a tiny stage under a low ceiling. The place wreaks of stale beer, sweat and is the perfect venue for intimate shows. From quiet acoustic acts to full throttle punk rock. Crowbar is perfect. I also heard it used to be a strip club...awesome!
4. The Backroom, Byron Bay NSW
Im not the biggest fan of the shows that are generally on at this venue, but when the right band comes through and plays this 500 or so capacity room, it is one of my absolute favourites! The sound that belts out of the backroom PA system is second to none. Classic Pub-Rock kind of atmosphere.
5. Leederville HQ, Perth WA
Another amazing All Ages Australian venue. AA venues are so rare in Australia and young kids are always the ones who enjoy themselves the most! I have never seen an awkward quiet set from any band here. The kids love it and so does anyone who ever plays there. Plus its located inside an amazing skatepark, which is sick!
