In celebration of our new Spring collection being available in-stores and online now, we are proud to launch our new AFENDS Artist Series turning the spotlight weekly to our creatives who have collaborated on the latest range.
We kickstart proceedings with Callum Preston, a Melbourne based artist / designer / director / jack-of-all-trades. Callum is a longtime Afends collaborator, a member of the Everfresh Crew with recent work including designs for the bands Parkway Drive, The Amity Affliction, Violent Soho and more.
Callum designed the Birdwatchers and Ro-Sham-Bo designs from the Spring Range.
Read on below.
How would you describe your style of art?
Its kind of varied, but i guess im known for skate style illustration, and some typography. I also have a small label that i release zines and soon a few other items on called Pyramid Scheme Press.
Whats your favourite medium to work with?
Black and white ink on paper, but happy to use anything really.
What do you do when youre not creating?
I try to be always creating, but hanging with my Fiance, friends, playing music and relaxing is pretty much it. Lifes good.
Where do you live, whats good about it and where would you rather be (if anywhere?)
Collingwood in Melbourne, Its great, my studio (Everfresh) is here, great friends, food, close to heaps of stuff. But I wouldnt mind a trip to Byron for a week.
What does your ideal world look like?
Its way to easy to be selfish and say something like me and all my friends with everything we could ever want. But really, the ideal world to me is one where all the worlds issues are gone, healthy, happy, and freedom for all. I wouldnt hate it if i had a Back to the future pinball machine though
If you were in a band what would it sound like?
I am. Its called Eaten By Dogs. It sounds like an Alt Country/ spaghetti western soundtrack/ Johnny Cash
Whats music have you been spinning of late?
Skyhooks, Letlive, Huey Lewis, Australian Crawl, Nick Cave, Pantera, Parkway Drive, Tegan and Sara is a bunch of stuff from the last few weeks id say.
What is your spirit animal?
Whats the best (or worst) advice youve been given?
Wasnt really advice, but i was brought up to turn the other cheek, and its great, I really dont hold onto anybullshit, Grudges, issues, whatever, who has time, Im busy enough as it is to have people i need to avoid or whatever. Keep it positive.
What makes you happy?
My lady, my family and friends. Creative expression. Parks and Recreation (The show and the activity)
What makes you angry?
Homophobia, racism, general ignorance, photocopier paper jams.
What could you not live without?
And last but not least question: what is your favourite piece in the collection?
Im really liking that Rain Down Jacket, its been cold and wet down here in Melbourne. Thats a great jacket for that, but with a tropical feel to keep the vibe up.
