Words by Nick Colbey:
Recently myself and Torren Martyn set off on a 10 day trip to West Oz. The trip coincided with our mate, Matt Donny’s 30th. Somehow we lucked into the first swell of the year for the North Western coastline, winging it up north the day we landed with not a clue where to go. Luck would have it we arrived in time for flawless 5-6 foot draining lefts.
We were also accompanied by thousands of flies, “The worst in 30 years so all the older people are saying,” according to Marine Durant, local resident/desert princess of the Bluff. By day 10 we had covered 3329kms of red dirt, long freeways and coastal tracks. Our Wicked Camper was more on the luxurious side with a rooftop pop up tent that we passed out in head to toe every evening, drained and salty.
We caught up with Ordy (Russell Ord) and Jerome Forrest for our last few days and hung out around Margaret River at his gumtree house, us East Coasters heavy on the plonk. The Box flared for our last morning in a rare case of perfect but not too scary conditions, although I was still shitting my pants watching them draw off the reef. It’s true what they say, The West is best.
